Description
The study area, the Doro !nawas mountains, are located in the Namib Desert, in northwestern central Namibia. Due to the low rainfall (about 50 mm annual average) the vegetation here is mostly sparse. Larger trees and bushes are usually found only along smaller dry riverbeds. It is open, well contoured, particularly rich in game, uninhabited, has a number of permanent waterholes and has not been used commercially for decades. Due to its very active and extraordinary wildlife, there are NGO projects in this region to care for rhinos, desert elephants and desert lions (savetherhinotrust.org; desertelephant.org; desertlion.info).
